Winter car care in Michigan
Michigan winters are hard on cars that sat through a mild fall. The first hard freeze is when weak batteries die in parking lots, and when brake pads that were “fine in August” start to grind.
This page is the checklist we use with customers at Car Aid. We have six shops: Troy, Southfield, Waterford, Rochester, Shelby 23 Mile, and Shelby Van Dyke. Book the shop closest to you. Do not drive across the metro if your local bay can take you this week.
1. Battery and charging
Cold mornings expose a battery that already struggled in September. If the car cranks slow, or you needed a jump last winter, test it now. We test at every location.
2. Tires
Tread and pressure both matter on ice. Michigan law does not require snow tires, but bald all-seasons on a first freeze is how people slide through intersections. We will measure tread and call out uneven wear that points to alignment.
3. Brakes
If you hear grinding, or the pedal travels farther than it used to, do not wait for the first snow. Photo diagnostics so you see the rotor and pad, not a mystery line item.
4. Fluids
Coolant strength, washer fluid rated for freeze, and oil that is actually due. Buy 2 Get 1 Free oil change is the easy one to stack with a winter check.
5. Lights, wipers, heat
You will drive in the dark more. If a low beam is out, replace it before the first 4:30 pm commute in the rain.
6. Lifted trucks and high-roof vans
If you need extra ceiling height, Rochester at 202 South St is the shop built for that work. Manager Nick. Phone (248) 651-6339.
